Phonics, zoophonics
How did he learn the letters ? And the sounds ?
Whenever he was awake I would sing to him. This was his first intro to phonics.
I would sing a unique version of "wheels on the bus":
"The alligator on the bus says "a" "a" "a" .. all day long / the bear on the bus says "b" "b" "b" all day long / the cat on the bus says "c" "c" "c" all day long" and so on.
A quick preview on how zoophonics works:

A quick preview on how zoophonics works:
- every letter is "drawn" in the shape of an animal the "b" is a bear while "d" is a deer, this way kids will never confuse these two similar letters
- every letter has a sound and a movement
- kids start out with lowercase letters, not uppercase. The books we read to them aren't written in uppercase, therefore if they're familiar with lowercase letters they can soon learn to follow you while we're reading to them

The beginning
Let's start with the beginning, like we should..
From the very first month of life, we started reading. At first I didn't have any books for kids, so we read whatever we had on hand, like the National Geographic magazine. It had bright pictures and good text, so we just sat and read. National Geographic Romania
I used to read him for hours, and he would just listen, look at the pics and enjoy the moment. I started buying books for children, and the first one we read was The Gingerbread Boy
He loved the pictures, the tone of my voice reading to him,the rhymes and even though clearly he couldn't understand anything he still loved this.
I would read the story, then talk about what we saw in the pictures, point to all the objects and explain simply what they each were.

Ever seen a two year old read ? No, I don't mean simply recognizing the words, something he's seen written, over and over again, like "mama", "dad" "dog" "cat", but actually reading each letter, sounding it and making out the word !
Well, my little boy can do just that. How ??
I'm going to take you on the journey of how he learned and is learning how to read, in two languages.
