Phonics, zoophonics

How did he learn the letters ? And the sounds ?

Whenever he was awake I would sing to him. This was his first intro to phonics.

I would sing a unique version of "wheels on the bus":
"The alligator on the bus says "a" "a" "a" .. all day long / the bear on the bus says "b" "b" "b" all day long / the cat on the bus says "c" "c" "c" all day long" and so on.

A quick preview on how zoophonics works:

  • every letter is "drawn" in the shape of an animal the "b" is a bear while "d" is a deer, this way kids will never confuse these two similar letters
  • every letter has a sound and a movement
  • kids start out with lowercase letters, not uppercase. The books we read to them aren't written in uppercase, therefore if they're familiar with lowercase letters they can soon learn to follow you while we're reading to them
